We all like a little bit of romance.  Romance spices up our life.  It is a wonderful way for us to show someone how much we care about them and how much we want to do something for them.  Romance can also be a lot of fun for both of you. So whether you are dating or your tenth wedding anniversary, having a few romantic things to do up your sleeve will be a great way to express how you feel about your significant other and make it easier for them to express how they feel about you.

Getting the mood right for a romantic evening is one way to get your night off to a good start. Remember that you don’t have to wait for your boyfriend or husband to be romantic to create the perfect evening. The goal is to create a setting and atmosphere where he wants to be more  loving towards you.

TIP: Before doing anything that you feel is romantic, DO YOUR RESEARCH. Find out what the other person likes and also make sure you visit the places that you take your sweetie. The worse thing that you can do is plan a romantic evening at a spot that is not even there!!! You can take a person’s word for a place being romantic but the best way to be sure is to visit it yourself to make sure you are creating the mood YOU want.

  • At the beginning of your night, give your date a few of his favorite fresh baked cookies or pick up his favorite snack from the grocery store or gas station.

TIP: Don’t make a huge deal out of baking him the cookies or buying him the candy especially if this is one of your first dates. Your act of kindness could come off as a bit much if you put too much focus on it. Instead try saying “I was just baking some cookies for my sister and I didn’t know if you liked oatmeal…” or I was at the grocery store shopping and I saw this candy, I vaguely remember you saying that you liked it, it was right at the counter so I just picked it up.”  Less is more, let him be the one to make the big deal out of your random act of kindness.

  • Go somewhere romantic.  This is usually a sure way to get you both into the romantic mood. You could try heading up to a lookout where you can overlook the city lights, or you could go for a walk along the beach and watch the sunset.

TIP: Romantic does not have to be expensive. If the weather is good search for free events. Some cities have live concerts with great bands or free dance lessons at certain times of the year. You might even want to check out your local bars to see if they have promotional events to increase their customer base. Make sure you research the band before taking your sweetie. Rock or rap music might not get your man in the mood that you want. Search for jazz bands or instrumental music.

First dates can be a little tricky because whilst you want to be romantic you don’t want them to assume that you are ready to go to bed with them!

Here is a list of things you can do on a first date:

  • Go for a walk along the beach watching the sunset
  • Go to a lookout point or walk along a popular area of the city
  • Have a romantic dinner at a restaurant and drink wine or champagne

TIP: Another great thing you can do on a first date is find out what they enjoy doing, then base your first date on that activity, for example if you know your date has always wanted to go up in a hot air balloon then will fulfill that wish.  It doesn’t have to be that extravagant and can even be as simple as taking them to their favorite ballgame.

If you are planning a romantic night in there are a number of ways to create a romantic mood:

  • Light a few candles around the house and dim the lights
  • Play soft romantic music in the background
  • Plan a night-time backyard picnic.  Grab a blanket and a picnic basket with cheese wine and strawberries and head outside to look up at the stars

Romantic evenings don’t have to stop after the first few dates either.  Surprising your partner 1, 2, 5 or even 10 years down the track is very romantic and will be very much appreciated by them!

  • Men like to know that they are admired and appreciated.  What can you do to show them you admire and appreciate them?  A massage?  A thank you card for everything they have done for you?  Anything!
