“Does my husband love me?” and “Do I feel loved by my husband?” are two different questions.
Understanding which one you’re really asking can change what you do next.
Maybe you know your husband loves you.
Or at least, you think he does.
But lately, something has made you wonder.
Maybe he doesn’t say “I love you” as often as he used to. Maybe the affection has faded, the conversations feel more practical than intimate, or you’ve started noticing how easy it is to live beside each other without really connecting.
And now you find yourself asking a question you never expected to have to ask:
Does my husband still love me?
It can be surprisingly difficult to answer.
Because love in a long-term marriage doesn’t always look like it did in the beginning. The butterflies may quiet down. Responsibilities pile up. Date nights become harder to arrange. And sometimes love gets expressed through ordinary things that are easy to overlook.
But there’s also an important distinction: love becoming less romantic isn’t the same thing as love becoming less present.
A husband who loves you may not always express it perfectly, but that love tends to leave evidence — in the way he treats you, considers you, responds to your needs, and continues to choose the relationship.
So rather than trying to read his mind, let’s look at the signs that can help you answer the question for yourself.
Signs That Your Husband Still Loves You
There isn’t one universal way a husband shows love.
One husband may be incredibly affectionate but terrible at talking about his feelings. Another may rarely initiate romantic gestures but be the first person beside you when something goes wrong.
Someone else may express love by making your coffee every morning, fixing the thing you mentioned was broken, or remembering something you told him three weeks ago.
So don’t use the signs below as a test your husband has to pass — and don’t worry if you can’t check every one of them off.
Instead, think of them as places to look for evidence of love in your particular marriage. You may even begin to notice ways your husband loves you that you’ve been overlooking.
1. He Shows Affection in Ways That Feel Natural to Him
Affection can certainly look like kisses, cuddling, holding hands, touching your back as he walks past, or pulling you close on the couch.
But not everyone is naturally physically affectionate.
The bigger question is: Does your husband find ways to express warmth toward you?
Maybe it’s physical touch. Maybe it’s humor. Maybe he brings you something from the store because he thought you’d like it. Maybe he checks that you got home safely.
Pay attention to the little ways he reaches toward you.
2. There Is Still an “Us” in the Way He Thinks About His Life
Listen to the way your husband talks about the future.
Does he naturally imagine you in it?
It doesn’t have to be a conversation about growing old together. It might be talking about where you’ll go next summer, something you should do to the house, what you’ll do when the kids are older, or what the two of you should have for dinner Friday night.
Those little assumptions about us can tell you something important:
He still sees his life as connected to yours.
3. Your Experience Matters to Him
A loving husband isn’t responsible for making you happy all the time.
But your happiness, hurt, worries, hopes, and experiences should matter to him.
Maybe he asks about your day. Maybe he notices when you’re overwhelmed. Maybe he doesn’t notice at all until you tell him — but when you do, he cares.
You don’t need a husband who can read your mind.
Look instead at what happens when you let him into your world.
4. He Lets You Into His World
Emotional closeness doesn’t always mean sharing deep secrets late into the night.
Sometimes it’s much more ordinary.
He tells you what happened at work. He complains about something that’s bothering him. He tells you an idea he’s been thinking about. He asks what you think. He sends you something because he knows you’ll understand why it’s funny.
These little moments say:
You’re still one of my people.
5. There Is Respect Between You
Love and respect aren’t exactly the same thing, but respect matters tremendously in a loving marriage.
That doesn’t mean your husband never gets irritated, raises his voice, says something he regrets, or handles conflict badly.
People are imperfect.
Look at the larger pattern.
Can you disagree without routinely humiliating, belittling, threatening, or intentionally hurting one another? Can either of you acknowledge when you’ve crossed a line? Is there room for your opinions, boundaries, and feelings even when he doesn’t agree with them?
Love shouldn’t require you to become smaller to keep it.
6. He Contributes to the Life You’ve Built Together
Don’t measure your husband’s love by whether he washes the dishes.
Instead, look at whether he sees your shared life as something he has a role in maintaining.
That contribution can look different from marriage to marriage — earning income, parenting, cooking, cleaning, managing appointments, fixing things around the house, handling errands, planning, caregiving, or a hundred other responsibilities.
The question isn’t whether he does everything you wish he would.
It’s whether there is some sense that this life belongs to both of you.
7. He Still Notices You
There is something wonderful about catching your husband looking at you.
But don’t panic if he isn’t staring lovingly across the room every Tuesday afternoon.
Being noticed can show up in other ways.
He compliments you. He notices your haircut. He knows when you’re unusually quiet. He laughs at something only the two of you would understand. He reaches for you when you walk by.
After years together, being seen can sometimes be one of the quietest expressions of love.
8. He Seeks Connection With You
Sex can be one expression of love and connection, but it isn’t proof of love by itself — and changes in sexual desire don’t automatically mean love has disappeared.
Instead, look more broadly at whether your husband still seeks closeness with you.
Does he sit beside you? Talk to you? Touch you? Want to spend time together? Share things with you? Initiate sex or respond warmly when you initiate affection?
Connection takes many forms.
What you’re looking for is whether there are still moments when the two of you turn toward each other.
9. You Have a Sense That You’re on the Same Team
Marriage doesn’t require complete transparency about every text message, password, thought, or conversation.
What matters more is whether there is trust.
Do you generally feel that your husband is operating in good faith with you? Does he behave in ways that make the relationship feel secure rather than deliberately secretive? When something threatens that trust, is he willing to talk about it?
Love doesn’t mean surrendering all privacy.
But a healthy marriage shouldn’t require you to constantly investigate your spouse to figure out what’s going on.
10. He’s Willing to Work Through Things With You
Perhaps one of the most meaningful signs isn’t how your husband behaves when everything is going well.
It’s what happens when things aren’t.
Can the two of you eventually come back to the conversation? Is he ever willing to reconsider his position? Can he apologize? Compromise? Try something differently? Hear what you need even when he doesn’t completely understand it?
He won’t get this right every time.
Neither will you.
But willingness matters.
Signs He May Be Falling Out of Love
So what if something really has changed?
Less sex, fewer texts, more time alone, or even a husband who seems distant aren’t reliable proof that he has fallen out of love. Any one of those changes could have dozens of explanations — stress, exhaustion, resentment, depression, disconnection, problems at work, changes in the season of your marriage, or simply a need for more space.
What matters more is the pattern you see over time.
If your husband seems increasingly disengaged from the relationship, shows little interest in reconnecting, consistently dismisses your attempts to talk about what’s happening, or no longer seems willing to invest in the marriage, that’s worth paying attention to. Not because it proves he doesn’t love you, but because something important in the relationship may need attention.
And that’s an important distinction. You don’t have to diagnose whether your husband is “falling out of love” before you’re allowed to acknowledge that you feel lonely, disconnected, unwanted, or unhappy in your marriage.
Instead of asking, “Which signs prove he doesn’t love me anymore?” you may get further by asking, “What’s changed between us — and is he willing to talk about it with me?”
What to Do Instead of Counting Signs
If you came to this article wondering, “Does my husband still love me?”, I don’t want you to leave counting how many of these ten signs your husband passed.
Instead, zoom out.
What is the overall pattern of your marriage?
Where does your husband reach for you?
Where does he consider you?
Where do you still see friendship, affection, loyalty, concern, partnership, trust, or connection?
And just as importantly: What feels missing that caused you to ask this question in the first place?
Because sometimes the deeper question isn’t “Does my husband love me?”
It’s:
“Do I feel loved in my marriage?”
Those aren’t necessarily the same question.
Your husband may genuinely love you while expressing that love in ways that aren’t reaching you. And if that’s what’s happening, you don’t necessarily need to prove whether his love exists.
You may need to start talking about what would help you experience more of it.
